I remember reading one story about the people at BP trying to guess what the most likely layout for the Enigma would be. A lady suggested it was laid out alphabetically, all the men dismissed it. Imagine their surprise some months later when they found out she was right :-)

But I see photos where they keyboard is not in alphabetical order, odd.

It is very similar to old mechanical typewriter layouts (minus punctuation marks and Umlaute)- they only put the L on the very end (it should follow the K) and the the P (actually after the O) in front of the Y. These mechanical devices were not easy to handle, by the way, one needed considerable strength in arms, hands and fingers.

In German standard the P would be right next to the O and the L would be up next to the K, same as in the EN standard, really.

Yes, it's standard in Germany. Although the normal keyboard additionaly includes ä, ü. ö and ß )

No, not standard German layout, but close. In German layout only the letters Z & Y are swapped around (plus the comma etc). The keyboard here seems smaller, is that why the P & L are in different positions, too? Or maybe they were trying to fill the space because they don't have the punctuation marks.

Yes, QWERTZ... is the standard German layout.
