A little head-butting going on at the hay feeder. Bulls will be bulls! #Maine #farming
We still have loads of snow, but we are making powah!
This bad boy knows I'm watching him. #Maine #birds #baldeagles
Bald eagle scouting out my bird feeders. The gray squirrels had better run for cover!
My husband, the Cranberry Man (CM) dries and cleans some of our Highland's horns. This one he sold for a drinking horn to a man doing Celtic reinactments.
I DON'T HAVE A SELF-ESTEEM PROBLEM. Chauncey of Troy (shown here) knows she's a beauty. She comes from a great line of Scottish Highland coos on our farm.
A fresh bale of hay always nets a crowd at the feeder. #Maine #farming #ScottishHighlandcoos
A GOOD DAY TO GO WALKABOUT. Monday afternoon our cows took a circuitous route around the farm across the pond. Just checking things out!
We've been down to -30F this winter and yet, thanks to judicious mulching, I was able to dig these fresh carrots out of the ground in Maine today. #winter #veggies #Maine #carrots
CARROTS WAITING TO BE DUG. I always get a thrill when I push back the mulch straw, dig into the soft ground and uncover fresh carrots just waiting to be liberated. Today I dug about 12 lbs.
A GOOD DAY TO DIG CARROTS. An old timer told me 20 years ago that the best way to overwinter carrots is in the ground (like parsnips). During the January thaw, I dig out enough to get us to spring, when I did the balance. At 45F, today qualified as a January thaw and I had good luck digging!
BLAST FROM WINTER'S PAST. This cutie is John Wixson, my great-grandfather Charles' youngest brother. Charles, an amateur photographer, took the pic on his parent's farm in Winslow, Maine. #Maine #history #sleds #winter
My great-grandmother Addie Young (and her sons and grandson) moving turkeys into the yard. Our family had a turkey farm, raising thousands of birds a year. Addie was a shrewd businesswoman, too. I hope I take after her : )
ALL PUFFED UP WITH NO PLACE TO GO. This bluejay is taking advantage of a sunny spot to maximize the heat. #Maine #birds
My shy cardinal, taking during today's snow squall.
Cooper's Hawk feasting on a mourning dove. This is the first time ever a hawk has snatched a bird visiting my bird feeders and I'm wondering if the cold weather has made them more aggressive. #Maine #birds
Our young bull Crockett enjoying the Blizzard. He's knocking the snow off the balsams so he can nibble on the fresh green tips.
here's a pic of my cranberry Needhams from last Christmas. Time to make more!
Now that I have my writing and book selling done, I can go out and play with my calves!
On this day in 2011. Quite a difference from today at 60F!
Indian Pond near The Forks in Maine.
The higher the wasp's nest, the Old Wives would say, the more snow you'll get in winter. Well, this nest is 40-ft up. Just sayin'.
Sometimes you just have to find out where the road goes ...
